Job of The Week: Prevention Program Specialist

This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring a job posting as a Prevention Program Specialist for Title IX Prevention Outreach and Education (POE) Department (job posting 1000994). If you are passionate about educating the university on anti-discrimination, relationship violence, stalking prevention, and more, this may be the role for you.  

The Office for Civil Rights and Title IX Education and Compliance supports the MSU campus community in creating a safe and respectful environment for all. Their goal is to educate all campus members in regards to how to prevent, identify, report, and respond to discrimination, harassment, assault, relationship violence, hate, and more. They pride themselves on ensuring the MSU campus community has equal opportunity regardless of your background and work daily to redress systemic inequities and make MSU a more inclusive space for all.

In this position, you will work collaboratively with a team, and focus on supporting and educating the MSU community on the anti-discrimination policy. You will assist with creating training and educational opportunities for employees, facilitate and coordinate events to engage the campus community and increase conversation about anti-discrimination, conduct listening sessions, and assist in response to climate needs through MSU. You will also facilitate training, workshops, and presentations as needed, remain current on relevant research in assault, relationship violence, and stalking, and partner with other groups across campus. 

The education, experience, and skills desired for this role include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work, student affairs, public health, psychology, or similar, and experience working with organizations designed to help those impacted by discrimination, sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking and more. You should also know relevant federal policies including Title VII, Title IX, and Clery Act. This role requires you to be confident in your confidentiality, sensitivity, and neutrality, as well as have the ability to make sound decisions in urgent situations.

Online – Student-Made Michigan State: This holiday season, give back to the MSU student community by purchasing gifts from the Student Marketplace!

November 7th- December 21st – Michigan Made Holiday Exhibition & Market: Join us every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from November 7th to December 21st for artwork ranging from fine arts to small gifts to jewelry, paintings, pottery, leatherworks, and more! 

November 15th – Holiday Shopping Night at Impressions 5: Kick off this holiday season at this annual event and find unique STEM-related gifts, toys, books, and more for your loved ones! Enjoy festive drinks, music, and gift wrapping, as proceeds go 100% to a mission-based non-profit organization, Impressions 5. 

December 7th – Holiday Market: From 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., visit the Lansing Shuffleboard and Social Club to get into the holiday spirit. Shop local vendors and try some food from our vendors as well!

December 7th & 8th – Winter Arts & Crafts Show: The Annual Arts and Crafts Show is a beloved event here at MSU, and also serves as a fundraiser for the University Activities Board (UAB). Campus Events

Throughout November – Native American Heritage Month Events and Educational Programs: As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month throughout November, MSU kicks off the month with back-to-back events, amplifying the voices of Indigenous students, staff, faculty, and organizations on campus. Events include lectures from MSU or invited speakers, craft workshops and participation in discussions, and social lunch events that will help attendees learn more about North American Indigenous people, culture, history, and customs and help build community among each other.

November 13th – Make Art, Make Change!: Join us from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 pm. at the MSU Broad Art Museum to amplify your voice through artmaking and community. There will be snacks, music, and good vibes included! Please visit their website to register for this free event. 

November 14th & December 12th –  Deepening your Essential Skills: If you have completed a Spartan Resilience Education course, you are eligible to continue learning at this webinar. November 29th – December 22nd – Season of Light Show: Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 4:00 p.m., visit the Abrams Planetarium for a viewing of the Season of Light show! Many customs we observe during the holiday season have an astronomical connection – learn more at one of their shows. 

December 7th – MSU Symphony Orchestra and Choirs, “Holiday Glory”: The Wharton Center will be hosting more than 250 voices in the MSU Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the joy and spirit of the holiday season!

December 12th – Mariachi Herencia de Mexico: A Mariachi Christmas: Celebrate the holidays with A Mariachi Christmas performance with the two-time Latin GRAMMY-nominated band performing Mexican and American Christmas favorites. Be sure to secure your tickets now!

December 14th – Cocoa and Collection at the Broad Art Museum: From 1:00 p.m. to  3:00 p.m., you and your family can come on down to the Broad Art Museum to enjoy hot chocolate and create wintry works of art inspired by their collection! December 15th– Holiday Pops at the Wharton Center: The Lansing Symphony Orchestra will be performing classic holiday music and putting on a heartwarming celebration for the whole family at the Wharton Center. Hear more than 100 local voices sing and be transported by the joyous and soulful sounds of local talent! 

Greater Lansing Area Events

November 16th – Pie Making Class: From 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sweet Encounter Bakery Cafe will teach you how to make your own Salted Caramel Apple Pie! You will walk away with a pie of your own and a recipe to share with your family and friends. Here you can learn how to make a delicious gluten-free crust, a lattice pie, and cinnamon ice cream to top it all off. This class is for those ages 13 and up, and registration costs $89 per person. November 22- Silver Bells in the City: Are you ready to see the entire city shine? Join us in Downtown Lansing for a tradition of lights, music, and more to celebrate the city and the start of the holiday season. Be sure to visit the website for more information on this free family event! 

November 23rd- December 23rd – Wonderland of Lights at Potter Park Zoo: Take a leisurely stroll through the zoo’s festively illuminated pathways, where you’ll be surrounded by the warm, inviting glow of twinkling lights every Thursday-Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Additionally on December 1st, Toys for Tots will be holding their annual drive at the Potter Park Zoo, and as a thank you for your donations you will receive free entry to Wonderland of Lights.

December 7th – East Lansing Winter Fest: Come by the Hannah Community Center for a celebration of all things winter. This free event will have indoor and outdoor activities, ice carving, crafts, and more!

Job of the Week: Veterinary Surgery Nurse

This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring a job posting as Surgery Nurse for the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine (job posting 998848). If you are passionate about providing patient care for ill and injured animals and interested in working in the Surgery unit of the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC), this may be the role for you! 

The MSU College of Veterinary Medicine prides itself on diversity, innovation, integrity, compassion, and collaboration. Their vision states, “Together we will be the destination for teaching, innovation, care, and service,” with a mission of learning, discovering, healing, and protecting. 

In this position, you will be responsible for patient care of injured and sick animals primarily in the Small Animal Unit of the VMC. You will occasionally work in the Large Animal Unit, Anesthesia Support Center, and Emergency and Critical Care as well. This role instructs and demonstrates techniques, skills, cleanliness, and more to students, assistant students, and clinicians within the VMC. This job entails afternoon and evening shifts, as well as weekend shifts with overtime if necessary. Physical tasks include the ability to lift medical equipment and animals into cages, push gurneys and carts containing animals and equipment, climb stairs carrying lab equipment, and restrain animals. 

The education, experience, and skills desired for this role include two to three years of college, technical, or vocational schooling in Veterinary Technology, six months to one year of related or more responsible work in the realm of extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, sterilization, and drug-dosing. You should also have experience and knowledge in spreadsheets and other word processing software and past work in a veterinary research setting. You must be licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the state of Michigan within one year from your date of hire.

Job of The Week: Marketing Analyst & Social Media Coordinator

Today is International Pronouns Day! Using correct pronouns respects each other’s identity and fosters inclusivity. Pronouns are used every day to communicate with one another in and out of the workplace, and often they are assigned based on preconceived biases and perceptions. By educating about personal pronouns, we promote understanding and celebrate everyone’s intersecting identities.

What is International Pronouns Day? 

International Pronouns Day seeks to make respecting, sharing and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. This day raises the MSU community’s awareness to be gender inclusive and reminds us of the basic human dignity of appreciating and celebrating everyone’s multiple, intersecting identities. As we explore the significance of this day, learn about how MSU is implementing changes to promote gender inclusivity to create a beneficial environment for all. How can I contribute to a gender-inclusive environment? 

  • Speak and write in a way that does not discriminate against a particular sex, social gender, or gender identity and does not perpetuate gender stereotypes

What events are being held across campus? 

The MSU Gender and Sexuality Campus Center is here to provide you with answers to any questions you may have and with resources you may need! The center provides educational programs and resources to make MSU a more inclusive space for students, staff, and faculty. Tuesday, November 19th, the GSCC is hosting a Trans Allyship Zoom course for cisgender students and staff to learn more about working with non-binary and transgender peers on campus. What action is the university taking to advance gender inclusion? 

At MSU, we are committed to ensuring your identity is accurately represented and respected throughout our campus community while maintaining privacy. Additionally, there’s work underway with the Office for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, along with the Office of the Executive Vice President for Administration to advance the name, gender, pronoun data policy recommendations across our information technology systems. We are collaborating with the project management office and system owners to create an implementation road map to advance the policy requirements across enterprise data systems. In the interim, MSU encourages all employees to indicate their gender pronouns, if desired, on email signatures and other written communication.

SafePlace Operations Coordinator

This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring a job posting as an Operations Coordinator for MSU Safe Place, a division of University Health and Wellbeing (job posting 997270). If you are interested in supporting the Center for Survivors and maintaining the legal responsibilities of this important job, this may be the position for you!

The Michigan State University Center for Survivors provides free and confidential group and individual counseling to MSU Students who are survivors of sexual assault and abuse. The Center for Survivors stands with survivors against all forms of social injustice through empowerment and an inclusive community, priding itself on integrity, compassion, and collaboration. 

In this role, you will carry out day-to-day operations at the Center for Survivors Safe Place shelter and provide a clean, safe and supportive environment for those who are or have experienced violence. This role does have ethical and legal responsibilities as you must protect client confidentiality, and you will work under guidelines provided by Michigan State University and the state of Michigan, as well as VOCA. You will coordinate community donations, support residential clients with transportation and basic needs, oversee food and inventory supply, and participate in a shared case management system that supports collaboration and consultation with clients. In addition, you will coordinate with UHW Safety and Operations to ensure the physical shelter is up to date on fire drills, routine inspections, sanitation, emergency procedures and more. 

The education, experience, and skills desired for this role include an associate’s degree in any business-related field, one to three years of related work experience, and basic knowledge of computer terminology and operations. You should also have previous training experience with the dynamic of intimate partner violence and its effect on children, as well as experience in a 24-hour residential job setting. Physical demands include the ability to lift and push/pull 5-40lbs, work onsite, shovel snow and salt walkways, travel throughout the community, and work 24-hour shifts.

Happy World Mental Health Day!

October 10th is World Mental Health Day! While mental health is one of the foundations of health and well-being, it can often fall low on the list of priorities in the work setting. The World Health Organization has established this year’s theme of “It Is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace” to promote mental health awareness at work.  

Good mental health is vital to our overall well-being. Yet one in eight people globally are living with mental health conditions, which can impact their physical health, their well-being, how they connect with others, and their livelihoods. Mental health conditions are also affecting an increasing number of adolescents and young people. 

Work should never get in the way of maintaining good mental health, however, a busy schedule may make resources appear inaccessible. In honor of World Mental Health Day, here are some resources you can use at MSU and in your personal life. 

MSU Resources: 

Teladoc: MSU faculty and staff and their dependents currently enrolled in an MSU health plan have access to Teladoc – an online medical care service that gives you 24/7 access to a healthcare professional via web, phone, or mobile app in minutes. Teladoc’s services extend to behavioral health (anxiety, depression, grief counseling, etc.). 

University Health and Wellbeing: MSU employees have access to an Employee Assistance Program which provides confidential counseling at no cost. To best fit your work schedule, MSU offers both Zoom and in-person appointments.  

Health4U: Health4U focuses on all aspects of health with resources, support groups and educational courses. They offer a variety of resources dealing with mindfulness, psychological flexibility and more.  

Local Resources: 

24-Hour Crisis Services (Walk-In and Mobile):  The City of East Lansing provides walk-in or mobile crisis counseling and mental health assistance around the clock. 

Online Mental Health Screening: Ingham County Health Department offers free and anonymous behavioral health screening, linking resources connected to your results. 

University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Behavioral Health Services: Sparrow Hospital offers psychiatric and behavioral health services including holistic care in an external environment and art, music and yoga therapy.

Job of the Week: Residence Hall Director

This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring a pool posting for three open positions as a Residence Hall Director for the Division of Student Life and Engagement (job posting 991717). The Division of Student Life and Engagement seeks an experienced individual to provide supervision, leadership, management and more to a residence hall community. The Residence Hall Director is a live-in position and will be working under a Community Director, so if you are interested in this engaging job, this may be your role!

Student Life and Engagement strives to provide a world-class experience for students and guests, creating an immersive and connected campus experience. SLE prides itself on supporting and embracing the diversity and uniqueness of Spartans all around campus. 

In this position, you will supervise and train student staff, oversee student organization advising, individual student development and community development coordination. You will also work on residential curriculum efforts and administrative duties. This position is designated as critical status, meaning that during the events of a university closure or suspension of operation due to weather or other emergency conditions, you are expected to attempt to report to work as scheduled. This role has on-call duties, and if applicable, remote duties as well. 

The education, experience and skills desired for this role include a degree in a human resources-related field, such as student personnel or counseling, and one to three years of related or more extensive experience as a director in a residence hall or housing complex.

Campus Events

Benefits Open Enrollment – MSU Benefits Open Enrollment is October 1-31. Open Enrollment is your annual opportunity to review your coverage options and ensure you have the benefits that are best for you and your family as you head into the new year. Learn more on the HR Website and plan to visit the Benefits Fair on October 3 or one of the several Site Labs available throughout October.

October 2 –  Drawing Marathon: From 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., stop by this annual non-stop drawing event at the MSU Broad Art Museum with the MSU Department of Art, Art History, and Design. All skill levels and ages are welcome, and registration is encouraged for this free event. 

October 13th – Black Botany Weeds Tour: Join Angelica Bajos, Community and Sustainability Coordinator of the MSU Beal Botanical Garden for a deep-dive into the botanical exhibit, Complex Dreams. From 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., learn what weeds can tell us about our perspective on the values of plants and people as a part of the deep-rooted collaboration where art and plants intertwine. October 14th – 19th – MSU Homecoming: MSU will celebrate Homecoming 2024 with many activities for students, staff, alumni and friends of the university. This year’s theme is “Welcome Home, Spartans” to recognize that no matter where you come from, you have a home within the Spartan Community. The Homecoming parade is October 18th at 6:00 p.m., and the football game at Spartan Stadium against the University of Iowa Hawkeyes is Saturday October 19th. Single-game tickets are available for purchase on the MSU Athletics Website. There are also volunteer opportunities for those 18 and older, so be sure to register by October 3rd if you are interested in volunteering or looking to be in the parade!  

Learning Opportunities

October 15th – Cultural Competency: MSU prides itself on leading inclusivity and promoting full participation and a sense of belonging for all employees and staff. Join us in building cultural awareness and inclusivity skills that will last a lifetime, and learn about intent vs. impact, how to de-escalate tension, and identify self-awareness in the workplace. Enroll through EBS and join us from 1:00 pm. to 3:30 p.m. at the in-person class in the MSU HR building… 

October 3rd, 17th, & 31st – Implicit Bias Certificate Series: This Implicit Bias Series allows participants to examine the different factors of implicit bias through a series of models. Module one will go over identity, and discuss how we view the world. Module two will cover microaggressions, implicit bias, explicit bias and how we can address bias. Module three addresses systemic race in the U.S. context, and modules four and five discuss inclusive environments and taking action. Register for this three part course through EBS. 

Family – Friendly Events

October 5th – Family Day: FLY: The first Saturday of the month means Family Day at the MSU Broad Art Museum, and this month we are inviting you to make creative connections with our exhibits through a hands-on experience with interactive family fun. Explore Complex Dreams, an exhibit that places the experience of young Black girlhood center stage while forwarding a refreshing and resilient view of the power of Black women today. Registration for this free event is highly encouraged. 

October 6th – Totally Rad Vintage Festival: Join us at the Lansing Center from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to enter a time warp into the 80s, 90s and 2000s through vintage clothes. There will be vendors selling clothes, records, home goods, and more, and is open to all ages. There will be a free-play vintage arcade set up, Rad Relic Museum, nostalgic photo ops to fully immerse yourself into the recreated scenes of the 80s and 90s. October 25th – Trick or Treat on the Square: Save the date for Downtown Lansing’s annual Trick or Treat on the Square Event on Friday, October 25th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Local businesses will be passing out sweets, hosting fun games, and you will have the chance to get creative with Halloween crafts and activities. Be sure to dress up in your best costume and bring your candy bag!

October 1-31st – Michigan’s 4-H Children’s Garden Undersea Exhibit: If you are looking for something fun to do with your family, you should stop by the 4-H Children’s Garden to experience the Undersea Exhibit brought on by MSU AgeAlive! The gardens are open sunup to sundown until October 31st with free admission. Take a look at our website for more information on the 4-H Gardens and the exhibit. 

Farmers Markets Farmer’s markets are beloved events in many local communities allowing us an opportunity to support local farmers and small businesses and enjoy delicious produce, baked goods, and even homemade crafts and personal care items.
