Job of the Week: Office Coordinator

This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring a job posting as the Office Coordinator for International Studies and Programs at MSU (job posting 971859). If you are interested in supporting operations at the Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen), coordinating projects and programs, planning events, and providing first-level support for student employees, this may be the job for you. You will play a vital role in GenCen production, operation, communications and more.

The Center for Gender in Global Context serves as Michigan State’s hub for gender and sexuality research, as well as engagement and teaching resources with a global perspective. GenCen prides itself on connecting scholars, students, and community stakeholders with feminist knowledge to encourage social change. 

This in-person role’s main responsibilities include preparing reports and promotional materials for GenCen, maintaining the website, creating graphic standards, and implementing communication strategies and executions – all while adhering to university and GenCen’s core values and policies. You will also oversee communications targeted towards GenCen’s community, including but not limited to the annual magazine, emails, newsletters, social media, flyers, brochures, presentations, podcasts, annual reports, and GenCen’s website. On the administrative side, you will monitor and support all facilities, complete computer tasks, answer phones and emails, seminars, and provide first-level supervision for designated student employees through goal-setting and check-ins.

The education, experience and skills desired for this role include two or three years of college or related technical school, and six months to a year of related work experience including using social media platforms and customer service. You will be using Qualtrics, Adobe, Microsoft Office applications, and copyediting, so it is important to have background knowledge in these areas. You should also have experience in event planning, supervising, communicating, and working collaboratively.

If you are passionate about producing videos and creatively telling community success stories about nutrition and physical activity programming, this may be the job for you. You will play a huge role working in partnership with the Health and Nutrition communications team, storyboarding, scheduling, producing, editing and more.

Job of the Week: Occupational Safety Compliance Officer

This week’s featured job is an Occupational Safety Compliance Officer position for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) (job posting 955849). CANR is seeking an Occupational Safety Officer to enhance and lead the College’s safety management program. In the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, students use science, technology, engineering, mathematics, business and creative design to tackle some of the world’s biggest problems related to food, health and the environment.

In this senior-level position, you will oversee workplace health and safety for CANR faculty, staff, students, and visitors while building and fostering a safety-focused culture. In addition, you will develop, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve a comprehensive occupational health and safety management system. The Occupational Safety Officer will also investigate safety and health concerns and maintain records necessary to demonstrate compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local health, safety, and environmental regulations.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, physics, chemistry or a closely related field. Five to eight years of related work experience in industrial/occupational safety and developing and delivering safety training is also required. Experience within an agriculture setting is preferred, but not required to apply.

Job of the Week: Athletic Trainer I – Football

This week’s featured job is an Athletic Trainer I – Football position for MSU Intercollegiate Athletics (job posting 951538). Athletic training is a major specialty in the field of sports medicine where active daily involvement with athletes, patients, physicians, administrators, and coaches affect the safety, well-being, and health care of the competitive and recreational athlete. Through a combination of medical specialists and the active commitment of the athletic trainer, the Sports Medicine and Performance team at Michigan State University covers a broad entity of healthcare.

In this position, you will evaluate injuries to determine referrals as well as design and execute appropriate rehabilitation exercises. You will also educate and counsel coaching staff, athletes, physicians, colleagues, students, parents, media, and consultants. Other responsibilities include organizing and maintaining daily medical records, including daily treatment logs and prescription drug logs using a computerized sports injury management program.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a Master’s degree in Athletic Training or a related field as well as a National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) certification. Three to Five years of related work experience in athletic training or an equivalent combination of education and experience are also required. Previous experience as a Division I collegiate Athletic Trainer or experience as an Athletic Trainer for football are desired, but not required to apply.

This week’s featured job is a Human Resources Professional for MSU Extension (job posting 946783). MSU Extension is a large and complex unit with more than 700 employees in 83 counties spread across the upper and lower peninsula of Michigan.

In this position, you will support academic recruiting efforts and act as a liaison between MSU Extension and the central HR team at MSU. This includes coordinating HR processes to support areas, such as recruitment and selection, orientation and onboarding, performance management and development, and employee retention and succession planning. Other responsibilities include assisting in developing plans, objectives, policies, and procedures for department operations, maintaining employee records and ensuring data accuracy in HR systems.

Job of the Week: Kellogg Center Event Manager

This week’s featured job is a Kellogg Center Event Manager for the Culinary Services Kellogg Operations Department (job posting 943954). Serving as a “front door to the university,” the Kellogg Center profoundly impacts the greater MSU community, offering unrivaled customer service, an award-winning restaurant, experiential training for hospitality students, and flexible space to host an array of functions.

In this position, you will manage and coordinate events for Kellogg Center and Kellogg Catering at the hotel and other campus locations, including Spartan Stadium Tower, Breslin Student Events Center, and Munn Ice Arena. This includes overseeing food service and set-up duties for all events to ensure high-quality service to all guests, as well as management of event staff and details with the kitchen to secure proper timing and smooth events. May 5 – Museum Tour: Deep Rooted with Beal Botanical Gardens: What can art tell us about the relationship between plants and humans? Join Maeve Bassett, Applied Ethnobotanist and Education Program Director of the Beal Botanical Garden, for an immersive tour unearthing the historical, social, and political narratives growing within works of art from the MSU Broad Art Museum collection. May 5 – Piano Monster: In this family-friendly event, four grand pianos share the stage, commanded by multiple pianists whose medley of classical selections highlights multi-artist combinations, including piano four-hands. This year’s program will feature the classic children’s fairytale, Peter and the Wolf, by Sergei Prokofiev, part of an unforgettable musical experience at the Fairchild Theatre. May 17 – Open House with the Ohio State University BUGMobile: The MSU Bug House and the OSU BUGMobile will hold a joint outreach event at the MSU Bug House as part of the Excellence in Insect Science Symposium from 3-5 PM. All are welcome to this free event!

May 18 – Potter Park Zoo Diversity Day: Discover the richness of our community at Diversity Day! Included with general admission, this special event celebrates the diversity of our community. Join us at the zoo for a unique experience featuring local food establishments and service organizations showcasing the best of what they have to offer. May 18 and 19 – East Lansing Art Festival: Celebrate the 61st year of the East Lansing Art Festival in Downtown East Lansing. Over 180 jury-selected artists from across the state and country be on display. In addition, there will be a full line-up of performers on both days of the festival and an artist demonstration area that will be full of interactive and learning experiences from many different types of artists.

May 24-26 – Cristo Rey Fiesta: Come celebrate Hispanic culture at the annual Cristo Rey Fiesta on Memorial Day weekend and boasting authentic Mexican food, vendors, bands and dance troupes!

Learning Opportunities

May 7 and 8 – Building Awareness and Understanding Using the Intercultural COnflict Style Inventory (ICS): The ability to recognize and effectively respond to cultural differences in communication and conflict styles is critically important. Join a group of your peers in attending this workshop to increase cultural self-understanding of communication and conflict resolution approach, cultural other-understanding of diverse approaches used to communicate ideas and resolve conflict to more accurately interpret the statements and actions of the other party. Registration through the EBS Portal is required for this course.

Starts May 12 – Eastern Ingham Farmers Market: The Market will happen every Sunday from 10-2 at McCormick Park in Williamston, Michigan. The Market will have a variety of vendors including produce, locally raised meats, baked goods, and many items made by local artisans.

Job of the Week: Global Security Coordinator

This week’s featured job is a Global Safety Coordinator for International Studies and Programs (job posting 930036). International Studies and Programs (ISP) is the hub for international research, teaching, and outreach at Michigan State University. 

In this position, you will serve as a member of the Office for Global Health, Safety and Security and support operational management of international health and safety matters. In collaboration with both the Director and Senior Coordinator of Global Health, Safety and Security, you will oversee office management, analysis, travel preparedness and plan response strategies to promote and protect the well-being of MSU travelers. 

You will share 24/7 coverage for international emergencies and the main telephone number/email address for Global Safety. This includes monitoring international incidents or worldwide events that may affect MSU travelers abroad. You will develop plans and guidelines to provide clear safety protocols while supporting department communication efforts through website updates, email newsletters, and university-wide communications. 

Occasional domestic and international travel will be required for conferences/training or site assessments. This is a hybrid position with the expectation that you will work on campus three days a week and remote for two. 

Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be required by completing a four-year degree in a related field such as International Relations, Foreign Language, Communication, or similar is required. Three to five years of related experience in emergency coordination, international travel and security, or campus crisis/risk management is also required. You should have prior experience living, studying or working abroad.

Job of the Week: Core Procurement Buyer

This week’s featured job is a Core Procurement Buyer for University Procurement and Logistics (job posting 928832). University Procurement and Logistics competitively solicits, negotiates commercial contracts, and issues orders for goods and services in support of MSU’s mission.

In this position, you will be responsible for purchasing a variety of complex commodities, specifically for MSU Extension, research, and farm management, requiring extensive knowledge and expertise. Negotiating and executing complex, large-dollar purchases is required. You will collaborate with university stakeholders and subject matter experts to obtain the best value on complex commodities in support of MSU. You will participate in a team of procurement professionals to evaluate purchase requisitions for appropriateness, content, compliance, and clarity. 

The Core Procurement Buyer will also manage the procurement process by writing, issuing, and soliciting requests for information, proposals, and/or quotations (RFIs, RFPs, and/or RFQs). You will assemble stakeholder specifications for complex, unique, and large-scale purchases, determine suppliers to be solicited, evaluate proposals, and prepare bid analyses. You will also source suppliers by selecting the proper procurement methodology and demonstrate strong negotiation skills while partnering with MSU legal and risk management offices. 

You should have knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business Administration with relevant coursework in marketing, business law, finance, public relations or computer science, along with five to eight years of related work experience. An advanced degree in supply chain, STEM, or law field and demonstrated knowledge in supply chain compliance is desired.

Job of the Week: Senior Director of Development

This week’s featured job is a Senior Director of Development for the Office of Philanthropy for Undergraduate Education (job posting 920213). The Office of Philanthropy for Undergraduate Education (OPUE) exists to assist donors who are interested in supporting students at all levels of education here at MSU. 

In this position, you will serve as the unit’s Chief Development Officer and as a strategic partner to the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education. You will be planning, collaborating and implementing methods of prospect identification, solicitation, and cultivation for successful solicitations of funds.

You will supervise, direct, and motivate staff by promoting excellence and measurable goals. This role will actively mentor and train staff and provide frequent opportunities for professional development. You will also recruit, train, motivate and evaluate volunteers in order to accomplish college goals and objectives.

The Senior Director will also audit internal operations to develop standardized procedures and to ensure conformity with established policy. You will assist in budget preparation and both long and short-term goals and plans to determine required resources.

You should have a Bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field. Eight years of successful fundraising experience is also preferred along with demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and written/oral communications.
