Job of the Week: Laborer for Forest Akers Golf Courses

This week’s featured job is a temporary position as a Laborer at Forest Akers Golf Courses for  Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (job posting 956729). Forest Akers Golf Course is looking for someone to maintain and complete various routine tasks between their two public courses. In this temporary position, you will keep things in order and make the Forest Akers Golf Courses the most inviting place to be for students, staff and the community.

In this entry-level position, you will assist in performing maintenance tasks for specifically the East and West courses. Some of these responsibilities include mowing grass (including greens, tees, fairways, surrounds, etc.), seeding and sodding, and applying fertilizer. Additionally, you will also conduct preventative maintenance on the equipment, cleanup the courses, and perform maintenance on the irrigation systems regularly. MSU landscape services prides itself on helping employees maintain a positive work-life balance – capping you at 40 hours per week at the course. 

To apply, you should have some knowledge of the tools, methods and materials utilized on golf courses. You should also have proper footwear, a good driving record,  be comfortable lifting between 26-75 pounds, and be prepared to work in any weather condition. While those are the minimum requirements, it is desired the applicant is well-versed in golf course maintenance and snow removal, and have Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator License. Job of the Week: Occupational Safety Compliance Officer

This week’s featured job is an Occupational Safety Compliance Officer position for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) (job posting 955849). CANR is seeking an Occupational Safety Officer to enhance and lead the College’s safety management program. In the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, students use science, technology, engineering, mathematics, business and creative design to tackle some of the world’s biggest problems related to food, health and the environment.

In this senior-level position, you will oversee workplace health and safety for CANR faculty, staff, students, and visitors while building and fostering a safety-focused culture. In addition, you will develop, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve a comprehensive occupational health and safety management system. The Occupational Safety Officer will also investigate safety and health concerns and maintain records necessary to demonstrate compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local health, safety, and environmental regulations.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, physics, chemistry or a closely related field. Five to eight years of related work experience in industrial/occupational safety and developing and delivering safety training is also required. Job of the Week: Veterinary Nurse

This week’s featured job is a Veterinary Nurse for the College of Veterinary Medicine (job posting 954961). The Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine is the destination for teaching, innovation, care, and service while meeting the needs of society in addition to clinical services and education. The College supports animal health programs conducted by both the Michigan Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 

In this position, you will supervise a team of veterinary nurses and assistants within the Academic Programs unit of MSU College of Veterinary Medicine. You will actively interact with and coach students using cutting-edge teaching models, specimens, cadavers, and live animals. Your role is integral to managing the teaching lab facilities, cooperative development, and oversight of proper lab protocols. 

Your success in this role requires but is not limited to, continued development of your knowledge of veterinary medicine, proficiency, and continual refreshing of clinical skills for instruction and coaching students in an engaged, hands-on, and positive environment. You’ll also need skills in handling animals of multiple species, including behavior and restraint, physical examination, and assessment of normal and abnormal conditions.  

The ideal candidate will have two to three years of college, technical, or vocational school with coursework in Veterinary Technology. They would also be licensed as a Veterinary Technician in Michigan or attain licensing within their first year. Work experience would include patient care, surgery, drug dosing, and sterilization. Desired, but not required, qualifications include a Bachelor’s in veterinary technology, experience working with livestock, multi-species animal nursing, and biological sample collection techniques. Job of the Week: Athletic Trainer I – Football

This week’s featured job is an Athletic Trainer I – Football position for MSU Intercollegiate Athletics (job posting 951538). Athletic training is a major specialty in the field of sports medicine where active daily involvement with athletes, patients, physicians, administrators, and coaches affect the safety, well-being, and health care of the competitive and recreational athlete. Through a combination of medical specialists and the active commitment of the athletic trainer, the Sports Medicine and Performance team at Michigan State University covers a broad entity of healthcare.

In this position, you will evaluate injuries to determine referrals as well as design and execute appropriate rehabilitation exercises. You will also educate and counsel coaching staff, athletes, physicians, colleagues, students, parents, media, and consultants. Other responsibilities include organizing and maintaining daily medical records, including daily treatment logs and prescription drug logs using a computerized sports injury management program.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a Master’s degree in Athletic Training or a related field as well as a National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) certification. Three to Five years of related work experience in athletic training or an equivalent combination of education and experience are also required. Previous experience as a Division I collegiate Athletic Trainer or experience as an Athletic Trainer for football are desired, but not required to apply.

Job of the Week: Communications Manager for IPF

This week’s featured job is a Communications Manager for Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF)  (job posting 940897). IPF builds, maintains, and beautifies MSU’s physical campus environment in support of the university’s education, research, and outreach missions. 

In this position, you will collaborate with team members to plan internal and external strategic communication strategies and tactics related to key initiatives and priorities. You will be responsible for designing, creating, editing, and adapting content while coordinating multimedia components for integrated communication efforts. These could include photography, videography, graphic design, and script writing. You will engage in strategic storytelling through feature writing and article development and manage social media content. 

This is a pool posting for two positions that will require working on campus regularly 2 -3 days per week minimum. It is not fully remote.

Required qualifications for this position include completing a four-year college degree program in journalism, communications, or public relations and one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience. 

IPF desires a candidate with experience using Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premier), website content management systems, and SharePoint. You must have the ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions and re-prioritize work when needed.

This week’s job of the week is for a Communications Manager I position in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics within the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (job posting 932698). The Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics (AFRE), one of the leading applied economics departments in the U.S., is ranked #1 in the world in the global ranking of agricultural and applied economics departments. The Food Security Group within AFRE is a self-organized team established in the early 1980s that works with local partners in developing countries to carry out empirically based policy-oriented scholarly research, engagement, and capacity-building focused on problems of global food security.

This job includes but is not limited to cooperating closely with the co-directors and other faculty of AFRE’s Food Security Group (FSG) to write, edit, and create materials (including video) on the activities and outputs of grant-funded international projects suitable for a variety of audiences. There is a strong emphasis on digital communications using the web, content management systems, and social media platforms. There is also the opportunity to travel to project sites in developing countries and to engage with communications specialists in partner organizations in those countries.

The desired candidate will be a self-starter with an outgoing personality who feels comfortable positively representing a team. Ideally, this position is best suited for a team player who can also work independently in a fast-paced environment, make sound decisions, and prioritize tasks effectively. Attention to detail and excellent interpersonal skills are desired.

You should have knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year degree in journalism, telecommunications, or public relations. One to three years of experience in public relations, marketing, graphic design, web design, publication production, and social media management is required. A background in social sciences and/or agriculture and natural resources is desired but not required to apply.

In this position, you will provide senior leadership to Culinary Services by planning, directing, and implementing activities, services, and programs related to food production. You will also manage daily food production operations within Culinary Services, including Residential Dining, Retail Operations, Kellogg Center Events, and The State Room.

This week’s featured job is a Senior Director of Development for the Office of Philanthropy for Undergraduate Education (job posting 920213). The Office of Philanthropy for Undergraduate Education (OPUE) exists to assist donors who are interested in supporting students at all levels of education here at MSU. 

In this position, you will serve as the unit’s Chief Development Officer and as a strategic partner to the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education. You will be planning, collaborating and implementing methods of prospect identification, solicitation, and cultivation for successful solicitations of funds.

You will supervise, direct, and motivate staff by promoting excellence and measurable goals. This role will actively mentor and train staff and provide frequent opportunities for professional development. You will also recruit, train, motivate and evaluate volunteers in order to accomplish college goals and objectives.

The Senior Director will also audit internal operations to develop standardized procedures and to ensure conformity with established policy. You will assist in budget preparation and both long and short-term goals and plans to determine required resources.

You should have a Bachelor’s degree in communications or a related field. Eight years of successful fundraising experience is also preferred along with demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and written/oral communications.
