This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring a clerical technical position (posting 724587) through the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in the College of Veterinary Medicine. 

This support staff position will begin in the Veterinary Medical Center receiving and routing telephone calls and taking and relaying messages. The staff member will also work at the reception desk to greet, register and direct clients to the correct waiting areas. The position also includes creating, reviewing and updating electronic client and patient health records, creating new appointments in the electronic scheduling system, collecting payments and accurately documenting them and communicating and listening to provide outstanding customer service. This can also be fulfilled with any combination of education and experience deemed to be equivalent. Job of the Week: Service and Maintenance

This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring an On-Call Service Maintenance position (posting 697062) for the Landscape Services Department within Infrastructure Planning and Facilities.

This support staff position assists in a wide variety of routine manual labor tasks related to general landscaping. This includes plant and tree care including preservation and treatments; grounds maintenance operations; mowing lawns and landscaped areas; collecting and disposing of debris; operating equipment used in landscape maintenance and construction; cutting weeds, brush and grass using hand and power equipment; performing landscaping installations including material, signs, site furniture, edging and boulders; operating trucks and trailers; transporting trees and plants; de-icing sidewalks; updating and maintaining MSU’s plant database; and participating in campus cleanup after sports events. The desired qualifications include experience in ground maintenance and snow removal, experience with the program ArcGIS Collector Application, a creative and innovative approach to learning and working, and a positive attitude toward teamwork. Job of the Week: Professional Aide

This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring an on-call professional aide position (posting 713836) at the department of Plant Soil and Microbial Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. 

This professional aide position will act as the Program Coordinator for a new biochar Extension and outreach program. The coordinator will build a community around biochar in Michigan and in the Great Lakes region by consulting with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and Extension professionals to develop, conduct, and coordinate information and activities about biochar. The coordinator will also play a key role in improving access to regionally relevant information and strengthening connections across stakeholder groups and communication with a team. Some specific responsibilities of this position include developing and organizing the content for an online biochar resource center, conducting a social network analysis of the region to identify stakeholders and continue to follow up, developing outreach and Extension products to address all groups and stakeholders, and evaluating the effectiveness of the programming and products. The desired qualifications and experience for this position are a Bachelor’s of Science degree and at least two years of relevant work experience. A graduate degree is preferred but not required. The candidate must prove they have experience developing outreach, educational materials, and related products and events to the above responsibilities. Strong oral communication, interpersonal skills, effective engagement ability, independent and collaborative work ethic, and ability to self-manage are the most important parts of a successful candidate.

Job of the Week: 4-H Program Coordinator

This week, we are featuring the 4-H Program Coordinator, an offsite position looking to hire for St. Joseph, MI (posting 710500) and Hillsdale, MI (posting 709099) in the Extension of Children and Youth Department.

This full time position has duties including providing leadership for 4-H Youth programs through clubs, after school programs, youth mentoring, and school enrichment efforts. These duties are carried out by ensuring that MSU Extension Volunteer selection procedures are followed before and during programming; training and leading local volunteers to reach out to others in their communities; attending and acting in an advisory capacity for 4-H at councils and other county-wide committee meetings; leading programs based in efforts towards diversity, equity, inclusion and civil rights; working collaboratively with directors, educators and program partners to implement the education priorities of 4-H throughout the community; using program development and advisory committees to conduct needs assessments for the county and its residents; and providing leadership, management and oversight of all county related finances associated with 4-H. This week’s job of the week is a Skilled Trades Supervisor position (posting 702128) for MSU Infrastructure Planning and Facilities.

This position will supervise the Power & Water Instrument & Controls (I&C) Maintenance Department, which reports to the director of utilities. Additional responsibilities include direct supervision of skilled trades I&C technicians; coordinating activities of the assigned MSU Information Technology Services specialist; recruiting, hiring, evaluating, and training staff; resolving employee complaints and grievances; assisting in reviewing departmental budgets and developing financial projections and expenditures of funds; participating in long-range planning for departmental operations; and more. You must be able to demonstrate a willingness to build good relationships through strong interpersonal skills to achieve objectives through mutual participation.

The ideal candidate will have Knowledge normally acquired from specialized training such as that acquired in one year of college, technical, vocational, trade, or business school with coursework in a skilled trade or Business Management; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervision, management and in one or more of the skilled trades areas including electrical, mechanical, automotive, carpentry, upholstery, and plumbing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and may require the following licenses: Elevator Contractor’s License, Master Plumber License, Certified Mechanic License, Master Electrician License, or a Class S- 1 Operators License.

Job of the Week: Laborer I

This week’s job of the week posting is for a Laborer I (Posting #694061) for Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF). IPF provides services like assisting in event coordination, landscaping, planning, design and construction, recycling, and more.

As a Laborer I, you will be responsible for performing, leading, and assisting seasonal staff in a variety of manual labor tasks related to general landscape, plant and tree care, preservation, and golf course maintenance and tournament/event setup operations as part of Forest Akers Golf Course. Other responsibilities include operating snow-removal vehicles and equipment, assisting in monitoring work areas to assure compliance with safety precautions, among others. The position is expected to work 40 hours per week from approximately April to November at $17.76–$18.69 per hour. This position is also expected to work at least every other weekend. Additional benefits are included as well as the possibility of working November through April 2022.

The Laborer I must drive a University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification. Ideal candidates must have a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license and possess or attain MSU Forklift operator’s permit prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period. The candidate must also possess of attain a valid Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification in categories Turf (3A), Ornamental (3B), and Right of Way (6) within 6 months of hire date.

The ideal candidate also has a background (at least 1 year experience) in golf course maintenance, sports field turf maintenance or strong equivalent background in similar agricultural or construction equipment work.

University Launches More Inclusive Hiring Process for Temporary Employees

MSU recently launched a new process for hiring temporary and on-call positions at the University. The new process requires the public posting of temporary positions to ensure all interested individuals have an equal opportunity to be aware of and compete for this type of employment at MSU. While other types of regular positions at MSU have long been publicly posted, extending that practice to temporary jobs is in line with MSU’s commitment to be a diverse and inclusive campus community.

As the University continues its work related to diversity, equity and inclusion, MSU’s Media and Public Information department is currently seeking a DEI Communications Manager (#669421) for University Communications. This position will serve as the lead communications professional for the unit and will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to communicate MSU’s broad commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as among the institution’s highest priorities.

The Communications Manager will additionally be responsible for assisting University Communications and other university units to facilitate appropriate messaging throughout MSU’s communications infrastructure to communicate key diversity and inclusion themes. The Communications Manager will also perform media relations functions including monitoring coverage on key initiatives and issues, assisting with issues management and media responses, coordinating and implementing media events and developing and writing news releases.

The Contact Tracers are responsible for reaching out to all patients diagnosed with COVID-19 to learn more about patients’ medical histories, the people who they have had close contact with, and provide them with information and guidance to stop the ongoing transmission/spread of COVID-19. The Contact Tracer will communicate with assigned contacts, obtain symptom information, refer contacts for testing, and provide instructions on quarantine.

Preferred education, experience, and/or skills include knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in business; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible experience in database management or data collection; equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job of the Week – Information Technologist II

This week’s job of the week posting is for an Information Technologist (Posting #648494) for the Facility for Rare Isotype Beams (FRIB). FRIB is a new scientific accelerator facility for nuclear science funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), Michigan State University (MSU), and the State of Michigan.

This position will be responsible for managing and maintaining the linux infrastructure, purchasing, deployment, security, automation, upgrades, and documentation. Research and pursual of new opportunities and technologies in areas of responsibility that add value to the laboratory will also be expected of this position.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or a related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment.
