Job of the Week – Office Supervisor II

This week’s job of the week is an Office Supervisor II (#623878) for the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. This position is seeking an individual with strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills to serve as the Clerkship Supervisor for the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The responsibilities for this role include assisting in developing the operational and administrative functions of the program, communicating daily with students and training hospitals, and problem-solving to troubleshoot program consequences. Additional responsibilities of this role include overseeing the student records database, assisting in the planning and presentations at the student clerkship program, and advising students of program requirement completion. 

The ideal candidate would possess knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired  in the first two or three years in college, technical, vocational or business school with coursework in office management and business; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in office management, budget preparation, financial and administrative record-keeping and secretarial skills; experience in word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing, and/or web page design or presentation software; or in performing responsibilities related to the operational activities of the employing unit; and may require one to three years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

2019 Clerical-Technical Recognition Award Winner

The Clerical-Technical Recognition Award is presented annually to a Michigan State University support staff member performing clerical-technical duties. The recipient is selected from nominations received by the CT Recognition Award Selection Committee. The award is sponsored by the Thomas and Concettina Gliozzo Endowment Fund to recognize outstanding MSU clerical-technical employees.

Thomi is a secretary for the Department of Communication where her she excels in her position providing leadership, technology, promotional, and human resource support to the department chair, faculty, graduate students, and staff. Exceeding the high expectations of her department, Thomi has been described as an essential component of the success of the Department of Communication. Chairing two standing departmental committees, the Equipment and Space Committee and the Social Media Committee, Thomi exemplifies great leadership by always striving to improve herself and the Department of Communication. With her dedication to the MSU community, Thomi consistently goes above and beyond to uplift those around her. Congratulations to Thomi!

Job of the Week – Automated Testing Engineer

This week’s job of the week is an Automated Testing Engineer (#619108) for MSU’s Information Technology Services, specifically for IT Services Application Services. This position is seeking an individual to be responsible for the overall quality of deliverables for MSU’s automated performance and regression testing tool set.

The responsibilities for this role include analysis of competitive products and technologies to provide recommendations to influence product/technology direction, monitoring industry standards and applying applicable changes to MSU’s current automated testing processes, and developing and publishing Test Summary reports. Additional responsibilities of this role include identifying and communicating testing issues to appropriate teams/stakeholders, mentoring team’s automated testing resources, and collaborating with constituents involved in product development and release. 

The ideal candidate would possess knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in computer science, information systems, business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; three to five years of software testing experience with any of the following automated or manual testing tasks: test planning, script creation and execution, defect monitoring, test reporting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Are you working on campus this summer? While campus may be a little slower, there are still things to do! From visiting the Dairy Store to grab a scoop of your favorite ice cream to enjoying free concerts at the Beaumont Tower. Whether you’re looking for something to do while you’re on lunch or something to do for the evening, there are a variety of campus activities held this summer.

If you’re looking for something to do on lunch, the Fresh Air Fitness series by MSU Health 4U Program offers a variety of activities during the week:

  • Monday – Tai Chi at the Summer Circle Courtyard
  • Tuesday – Yoga at the Engineering Courtyard
  • Wednesday – Yoga at the Wharton Center
  • Thursday – Pilates on the Green

If you enjoy music, you can find the MSU Carillon every Wednesday at the Beaumont Tower beginning July 3. (In case you’re not familiar with it, a carillon is a set of bells played in a tower.) If you’re looking for something sooner, you can attend Music in the Garden with Spartan Jazz at the Beal Botanical Garden. Make a picnic for the family and come out to enjoy the Music in the Garden: Spartan Jazz concert on Tuesday, June 25 at 7:00 p.m. You can also find a list of other free concerts held this summer at the College of Music website, including their Outdoor Summer Concert Series. Or enjoy music on your lunch break with Rest with Music at Abrams Planetarium. The Rest with Music series is every Monday from 12:10 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. You can find more information about this series, registration and featured artists at the Health 4U website. If you’re looking for another way to enjoy the outdoors take a walk to the MSU Dairy Store.

The MSU Dairy Store is the perfect place to grab a scoop of your favorite ice cream and enjoy the campus. MSU Dairy Store is open throughout the summer from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. during the week. They have  a variety of ice cream flavors from Banana Chocolate Chunk to MSU’s very own Izzo Malted Madness. You can get your own single scoop or maybe share a half gallon with the office. It’s that time of the year, and the staff at the Office of Admissions are buried in reviewing the record number of over 35,000 applications they’ve received this year and sending out final decisions for potential additions to MSU’s student body. Michigan State offers rolling admission, and with a university as large as ours, the Office is always busy, but especially so when it comes time to decide the fall freshman class. Admissions is also constantly taking applications from transfer, guest, and graduate students, as well as helping navigate the process for future applicants and prospective international students. All of the time put in is a powerful effort to enhance the student experience, a Bolder By Design initiative that places importance on the ways students learn and grow at Michigan State as well as the value of achieving an MSU degree.

MSU Culinary Services Ranks No. 24 in the Nation

Niche.com recently released its 2015 rankings for Best Campus Food, placing the Michigan State University Culinary Services dining program at No. 24 with an A+ score among traditional four-year colleges and universities in the United States. According to the rankings, Culinary Services—a department of the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services—is the top university dining services in Michigan.Eat at State graphic

The 2015 Eat at State summer hours of operation run through August 28 for the following locations:

Brody Square will be open Monday – Friday between 7 a.m. – 10 p.m.

The Vista at Shaw will be open Monday – Friday between 7 a.m. – 9 a.m., 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Riverwalk Market at Owen Hall will be open Monday – Friday between 7:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. through August 20.

Sparty’s locations:

  • Administration Building (Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
  • Brody (Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m., Saturday – Sunday Noon – 10 p.m.)
  • Communication Arts & Sciences, Engineering & Erickson: (Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.)

Eat at State ON-THE-GO is MSU’s own Food Truck service with two trucks in operation. Check out the Food Truck website for their Weekly Specials!

And Don’t forget the MSU Bakers! Deliveries are available Monday through Friday between 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

MSU Benefits Plus – Discounts and Programs

A reminder to all MSU benefits-eligible faculty and staff, you have the opportunity to enroll in several voluntary employee-paid benefits programs through MSU Benefits Plus. The optional programs include Vision Insurance, Group Legal Services, Critical Illness Insurance, Long-Term Care Insurance, Auto and Home Insurance, Pet Insurance and discount shopping.

Vision, legal and critical illness insurance have an annual open enrollment period during the fall of each year. That means you can only enroll at that time each year and once you enroll, you cannot change or cancel that enrollment until the next annual open enrollment period (unless you have a qualifying life event). The Inspirational Woman of the Year Award Recognition Reception will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the University Club and is free to attend.
