Job of the Week: Surplus Worker

This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring a Surplus Worker position (posting 716855) at the Campus Surplus Store and Recycling Center through MSU’s Infrastructure Planning and Facilities Department.

This temporary position was created to help sort, load, unload, transport, count, move, store and prepare materials for recycling and surplus operations; to assist in operating recycling and surplus equipment and machinery; and to perform general cleaning and maintenance duties in related work areas. IPF’s Campus Surplus Store manages the collection and processing of 40 million pounds of reuse, recycling and waste materials annually. The surplus worker hired for this position will be responsible for using a best use model to carry out the actions needed for the recycling and sorting.

There are three primary categories of responsibilities for the position. The first category is “people,” in which the worker is to train, communicate and facilitate an environment that encourages service excellence. The second is “partnership,” in which the worker exchanges information with campus departments and promotes environmentally and fiscally responsible decision making. The third is “stewardship,” in which the worker coordinates the movements and display of MSU assets while promoting the department initiative of landfill diversion. The desired qualifications for the position include one year of experience in recycling, surplus, or related operations; working knowledge of tools, equipment and processes used in recycling or surplus operations; possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license and meet MSU’s safe driving standards and successfully drive a University vehicle to perform job duties; the ability to do frequent lifting of over 75 pounds; and a forklift operator certification or the ability to gain one.

Job of the Week: Agricultural Laborer

This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring a Service and Maintenance Laborer position (posting 714930) at the South Campus Animal Farms in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. 

This temporary position was created to perform and assist in routine agricultural labor. This includes but is not limited to assisting the care and feeding of livestock, conducting routine maintenance of farm equipment and buildings, and loading and unloading supplies, materials, tools, and livestock. The laborer will also be tasked with assisting with skilled trades and tradesmen by working with tools and equipment across all farm units, and operating tractors and trucks. Requirements also include cleaning barns, sheds, pens, and equipment, seasonal grounds keeping, and any miscellaneous duties as assigned. The physical demands include lifting over 75 pounds and the capacity to walk fields and stand for extended periods of time. Read a full list of responsibilities here. 

The desired qualifications for the position include coursework in a secondary, technical, vocational, or trade school and/or college in the field of animal science. Job of the Week: Professional Aide

This week, MSU Human Resources is featuring an on-call professional aide position (posting 713836) at the department of Plant Soil and Microbial Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. 

This professional aide position will act as the Program Coordinator for a new biochar Extension and outreach program. The coordinator will build a community around biochar in Michigan and in the Great Lakes region by consulting with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and Extension professionals to develop, conduct, and coordinate information and activities about biochar. The coordinator will also play a key role in improving access to regionally relevant information and strengthening connections across stakeholder groups and communication with a team. Some specific responsibilities of this position include developing and organizing the content for an online biochar resource center, conducting a social network analysis of the region to identify stakeholders and continue to follow up, developing outreach and Extension products to address all groups and stakeholders, and evaluating the effectiveness of the programming and products. The desired qualifications and experience for this position are a Bachelor’s of Science degree and at least two years of relevant work experience. A graduate degree is preferred but not required. The candidate must prove they have experience developing outreach, educational materials, and related products and events to the above responsibilities. A prior knowledge of sustainability is also preferred. Strong oral communication, interpersonal skills, effective engagement ability, independent and collaborative work ethic, and ability to self-manage are the most important parts of a successful candidate.

Job of the Week: 4-H Program Coordinator

This week, we are featuring the 4-H Program Coordinator, an offsite position looking to hire for St. Joseph, MI (posting 710500) and Hillsdale, MI (posting 709099) in the Extension of Children and Youth Department.

This full time position has duties including providing leadership for 4-H Youth programs through clubs, after school programs, youth mentoring, and school enrichment efforts. These duties are carried out by ensuring that MSU Extension Volunteer selection procedures are followed before and during programming; training and leading local volunteers to reach out to others in their communities; attending and acting in an advisory capacity for 4-H at councils and other county-wide committee meetings; leading programs based in efforts towards diversity, equity, inclusion and civil rights; working collaboratively with directors, educators and program partners to implement the education priorities of 4-H throughout the community; using program development and advisory committees to conduct needs assessments for the county and its residents; and providing leadership, management and oversight of all county related finances associated with 4-H. The desired qualifications and experience for this position include a Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in youth development, volunteer management skills, demonstrated knowledge and awareness of social, cultural, and economic diversity in the community in which you are looking to work, strong interpersonal and communication skills, proficiency in technology and ability to travel some long distances. Job of the Week: Director of High School & Community Relations

This week, we are featuring the Director of High School & Community Relations position (posting 708416) in the Intercollegiate Athletics Department. 

The goal of this position is to establish, maintain, and improve relationships between high school coaches and the Michigan State football staff. The main responsibilities of this position will be cultivating and maintaining relationships with high school administrations and staff through outreach and educational programs. Secondary responsibilities include liaising between the University and high schools, coordinating and directing marketing efforts for programs such as the MSU Coaches’ Clinics and research visits from high school coaching staffs, promoting the philosophy and objectives of intercollegiate athletics programs, and serving as the principal contact for high school coaches. Job of the Week: Research Technologist I

This week we’re highlighting a Research Technologist I position (posting 707910) for the Clinical Neuroscience Lab. This is a funded project investigating abnormal visual perception in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in many aspects of the study including recruiting and scheduling participants, performing clinical interviews, collecting behavioral and neuroimaging data, and organizing study data. In addition, this position will involve general lab management, including maintaining ethical protocols. The research technologist will also have the opportunity to prepare scientific results for publication and presentation. Finally, there will be the opportunity to participate in mental health outreach activities. There will be ample opportunity to learn novel methods in functional neuroimaging, vision science, and clinical science; accordingly, this position should be viewed as a stepping stone toward gaining entry into graduate or professional school.

You should have knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in psychology, neuroscience, or related discipline and up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques. This week’s job of the week is a Public Engagement Coordinator position (posting #707290) for the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at MSU.

This position will serve as operational coordinator for the public programs and special events of the museum and report to the Director of Operations. Your primary responsibility is to plan and execute both public and private events, including rental clients from grassroots community organizations to corporations. Working closely with internal and external stakeholders the person in this role will further the MSU Broad’s strategic goal of fostering a diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible environment through collaboration and high-quality events. The Public Engagement Coordinator additionally serves as manager on duty during public hours and events, requiring in-depth knowledge of the day-to-day operations of the museum facilities including building, security, exhibition and student staffing processes. Job of the Week: Audiovisual Technician

This week’s job of the week is an Audiovisual Technician (posting #705059) for the College of Nursing.

This position will provide assistance to faculty and students with instructional hardware, software, audio-visual and simulation equipment in terms of set up, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting as requested for scheduled classes, on-site events, distance learning programs, special events, and more. This week’s job of the week is a Skilled Trades Supervisor position (posting 702128) for MSU Infrastructure Planning and Facilities.

This position will supervise the Power & Water Instrument & Controls (I&C) Maintenance Department, which reports to the director of utilities. Additional responsibilities include direct supervision of skilled trades I&C technicians; coordinating activities of the assigned MSU Information Technology Services specialist; recruiting, hiring, evaluating, and training staff; resolving employee complaints and grievances; assisting in reviewing departmental budgets and developing financial projections and expenditures of funds; participating in long-range planning for departmental operations; and more. You must be able to demonstrate a willingness to build good relationships through strong interpersonal skills to achieve objectives through mutual participation.

The ideal candidate will have Knowledge normally acquired from specialized training such as that acquired in one year of college, technical, vocational, trade, or business school with coursework in a skilled trade or Business Management; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in supervision, management and in one or more of the skilled trades areas including electrical, mechanical, automotive, carpentry, upholstery, and plumbing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and may require the following licenses: Elevator Contractor’s License, Master Plumber License, Certified Mechanic License, Master Electrician License, or a Class S- 1 Operators License.

Job of the Week: Laborer I

This week’s job of the week posting is for a Laborer I (Posting #694061) for Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF). IPF provides services like assisting in event coordination, landscaping, planning, design and construction, recycling, and more.

As a Laborer I, you will be responsible for performing, leading, and assisting seasonal staff in a variety of manual labor tasks related to general landscape, plant and tree care, preservation, and golf course maintenance and tournament/event setup operations as part of Forest Akers Golf Course. Other responsibilities include operating snow-removal vehicles and equipment, assisting in monitoring work areas to assure compliance with safety precautions, among others. The position is expected to work 40 hours per week from approximately April to November at $17.76–$18.69 per hour. This position is also expected to work at least every other weekend. Additional benefits are included as well as the possibility of working November through April 2022.

The Laborer I must drive a University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification. Ideal candidates must have a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license and possess or attain MSU Forklift operator’s permit prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period. The candidate must also possess of attain a valid Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification in categories Turf (3A), Ornamental (3B), and Right of Way (6) within 6 months of hire date.

The ideal candidate also has a background (at least 1 year experience) in golf course maintenance, sports field turf maintenance or strong equivalent background in similar agricultural or construction equipment work.
