Why Leave Campus When You Can Eat at State

It’s no secret that the dining halls on campus serve excellent food. Faculty and staff members have the opportunity to purchase dining plans so that they can enjoy the convenience of staying on campus and eating at one of the many dining halls. For those who want to purchase a dining plan, it’s important to note that the rate will increase this year to $6.75 per meal on August 19. You can learn more about the faculty/staff dining plan on the Eat at State website.

Speaking of the Eat at State website, it was recently transformed to provide a better user experience and an updated design! Be sure to take a look. You can find information about dining hours, dining plans, events and more. When you visit the homepage, use the “MENU” button in the upper right corner to navigate through the site, or scroll down a little to access dining hall menus and more. The new site is also mobile friendly, so feel free to visit on your phone if it’s more convenient.

If you do decide to stay on campus to eat, you can now visit Sparty’s Market or Starbucks at 1855 Place, open 7 days a week, 7 a.m.-9 p.m. These two retail locations opened for business August 1, and they are conveniently located at the corner of Kalamazoo St. and Harrison Road. The market and café are perfect if you want to grab a quick lunch or need a little caffeine to get you through the day. You can learn more on the Eat at State website.

Job of the Week 8/11/17

This week we are highlighting a Communications Coordinator (posting #455826) with the MSU Alumni Association. Reporting to the MSU Alumni Association Marketing and Communications Director, the Communications Coordinator will be responsible for organizing and overseeing the creation of promotional materials and brand identity for the MSU Alumni Association programming, events and activities through the development, design, creation and production of various mediums (paper, electronic, web, etc.) The Communications Coordinator will participate as a member of the MSU Alumni Association administrative team to articulate design priorities, receive information and communicate project status. The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for a book of work that may include projects such as Grandparents University, MSU Homecoming Week events and activities, MSU Travel programs, Alumni University, the President’s Graduation Receptions, Sparty Mascot Program, athletic related events such as Bowl Game Tours, Championship Tournaments, MSU Ring March and Alumni Engagement Activities.

Orientation for New Faculty and Academic Staff

Are you a new faculty or academic staff member? First of all, welcome to Michigan State University! We are happy to have you here and hope that you will love working at MSU.

To help your transition, the Academic Advancement Network (AAN) has organized an orientation event on August 22, 2017 at the Kellogg Center. There will be two identical sessions: one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

The Morning Program will take place from 8:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. (Continental Breakfast 7:45 a.m. – 8:15 a.m.) with the luncheon from noon – 1:30 p.m. and the Information Fair available from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. The Afternoon Program will start with the Information Fair available from 10:30 a.m. – noon, followed by the luncheon from noon. – 1:30 p.m. then the orientation session from 1:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.

There are two sessions available so that you can select the timing that best matches your availability. No matter which session you choose, you are still invited to attend the midday luncheon. Find more information about this orientation on the AAN website.

Campus Construction Update: What you need to know before the new academic year

As we prepare for the upcoming academic year, you may have noticed that some of the summer construction projects are starting to wrap up. For your convenience, we’ve compiled a list of the projects that are completed, those that will be finished by the end of the summer and those that will continue into the academic year.

Parking Lot Projects

  • Lots 83, 89, 91 and 100 will have portions closed over the summer for solar carport installation. Construction will be completed December 2017.
  • Lots 86, 93 and 104 will have portions closed over the summer for utility installations. Construction will be completed December 2017.
  • Lot 92 will have portions closed through the Fall 2017 semester for solar carport installation. Construction will be completed December 2017.
  • Lot 90 is offline.
  • Lots 79 and 63E will be closed entirely until August 21.
  • Lot 63W is now open.

Building Construction and Renovations

  • Construction has begun on the new Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building. Construction traffic will be heavy on Service Road.
  • Construction of the Business College Complex Pavilion is underway. Sidewalks to the south side of the Eppley Center have been closed to pedestrians.
  • Installation of windows in Hubbard Hall is complete.
  • The IM West HVAC replacement project is underway and will be completed September 2017.
  • Engineering Research Complex construction is underway. There will be increased construction traffic and noise in the area (South Academic District).
  • Renovation of room E100 and the corridor in the Veterinary Medical Center is underway. Through August, the west corridor will still be closed to through pedestrian traffic and there will be increased construction traffic at the northwest drive.
  • Bessey Hall first and second floor renovations are underway and will be completed mid-August.
  • Renovations to Olin Student Health Center are complete.
  • The 1855 Place Project is underway. Retail spaces opened in early August and the office spaces will open October 2017.
  • Construction in the Breslin Center and Spartan Stadium is ongoing.

Job of the Week 8/4/17

This week we are highlighting a Data Resource Analyst (posting #454000) with the College of Human Medicine. The Data Resource Analyst will work with the Institute for Health Policy staff to support the data management and statistical methods necessary to conduct health care research and quality analysis for Michigan Medicaid and other Michigan Department of Health and Human Service stakeholders. This position will be responsible for building analytic files comprised of statewide Medicare, Medicaid and/or Commercial claims/encounter and enrollment files augmented with clinical/assessment data and census data. Analyst must be willing to devote time to data cleaning, management and validation to generate usable data sets and will be expected to participate with scholarly writing.

Included among these programs is vision insurance through VSP. This vision insurance coverage can help with the costs of exams, glasses and contact lenses for you and your family. For basic information about the plan and coverage rates, you can visit the MSU HR website.

Benefits-eligible faculty and staff can enroll for vision insurance during open enrollment in the fall. Outside of open enrollment, benefits-eligible new hires or newly-eligible faculty and staff have 30 days to enroll from their date of hire or date of eligibility.

VSP via MSU Benefits Plus is a great option for MSU faculty and staff members so they can keep their eyes healthy with regular check-ups!

This week we are highlighting a Farm Manager I (posting #452506) with the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. This position will manage the daily operation and maintenance of Sheep Teaching & Research Center to facilitate the teaching, research and extension missions of the Animal Science Department and maintains active communication with the South Campus Farms Coordinator, Sheep Farm Faculty Coordinator and Animal Science Chair. Additionally, this position will manage the daily care of a highly productive sheep flock including execution of the breeding, health and nutrition programs; coordinate flock health program with the MSU farms veterinarian and farm faculty coordinator; maintain and evaluate flock health, breeding and productivity records; develop a feed budget in coordination with the faculty coordinator and south campus farms general manager and manage feed inventories; manage costs and prepare reports on farm finances; and manage staff and student employees including interviewing, hiring, evaluations, scheduling and resolving grievances and complaints.

Michigan State has an extremely large campus, so the solution many people turn to in order to get where they need to be is a bicycle. Everywhere you look, you’ll see people riding their bikes to get to work or class. If you’ve ridden a bike on campus yourself, you know it’s one of the fastest ways to get around.

As all bicyclists know, there will inevitably come a time when something needs to be fixed. Luckily, MSU Bikes is available and provides resources for all things bike related!

The mission of MSU Bikes is to “encourage bicycling and provide the accessibility, support and education necessary to make bicycling an option for the MSU Community.” And they definitely deliver! They provide bike sales, rentals and repairs to members of the MSU community while also offering classes on bike repair and safety.

MSU Bikes is located under Bessey Hall on the Red Cedar River, and they are open year round Monday – Friday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (except on university holidays). For more information, visit the MSU Bikes website.
