Kicking Tobacco Off Campus

According to the CDC, tobacco use causes nearly 6 million deaths per year. It is projected that by 2030, that number will increase to 8 million. Kicking this habit alone can seem impossible. With the help of nicotine replacement therapies, medication, and formal treatment; the odds of winning the fight against addiction go up significantly! To help change MSU’s statistics, Health4U has designed a program to help the stop of tobacco and nicotine use for employees.

As an MSU employee (or benefits-eligible dependent) who is currently using tobacco and ready to take the next step in quitting, you are eligible for the free, confidential Breathe Easy program designed to help. In this program, you will be offered a choice of programming which can include medication, or can be completed without.

To register for an upcoming pre-enrollment information session, call 517-353-2596, email health4u@msu.edu or visit 116 Linton Hall. The next information session will be held on September 20, 2017, from 1:30-3:00pm in room 338 of Olin Health Center.

Distinguished Staff Awards are back!

Remarkable, dedicated and hardworking are just some of the words used to describe the 2017 Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award Recipients. The Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award is presented annually to six university support staff members. They are hand selected by the Distinguished Staff Awards Selection Committee based on nominations received.

The award is named in honor of Jack Breslin, who served Michigan State University as a student leader, honored athlete, top administrator and steadfast advocate. His strong and innovative leadership played a pivotal role in MSU’s growth and development as the nation’s premier land grant institution.

This week we are highlighting a Senior Purchasing Agent/Supervisor with the Purchasing Department. This position supervises a team of procurement professionals responsible for a broad range of commodities and services. In addition, this position conducts complex procurement and contractual assignments. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Procurement, the Senior Purchasing Agent formulates specifications for unique, multi-faceted, and/or large-scale purchases with a value up to $500,000; processes sealed bids, RFIs, RFQs and RFPs; negotiates, approves and administers contracts; processes purchase orders with related documentation; and ensures compliance with university policies and procedures along with federal and state requirements and all applicable laws.

This month we’d like to thank our staff here at MSU Human Resources! With recent project launches like Agile Recruiting and Onboarding (ARO) and ALEX – the virtual benefits counselor, along with thousands of customer interactions and transactions, we had a busy 2016-17 academic year.

HR Staff Picnic
We recently held a staff picnic to recognize 2016-17 achievements.

To share a few numbers, our Solutions Team had 7,945 walk-in customers, answered 51,743 phone calls and received 40,000 emails last year. We closed 121,095 EBS form transactions. We had 747 support staff attend new employee orientation and 4,212 participants attend a professional development class.

Both our projects and operational work are critical to being a high-performing human resources organization. And the work we do supports the MSU community as they deliver on their student success and faculty research priorities. As the 2017-18 academic year begins, our MSU HR team members look forward to assisting faculty, staff, students, retirees and visitors.

So, thanks to our staff for supporting the university and thanks to the MSU community for allowing us to serve you!

This week we are highlighting a Police Officer (posting #457691) with the Michigan State University Police Department. MSU Police officers are expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct while protecting the MSU community and taking proactive measures to prevent crime. Officers patrol a nearly 13 square mile campus mixed with urban and rural elements. Community policing is strongly emphasized through a neighborhood model to enhance the safety and security of students, faculty, staff and visitors. Applicants should clearly state their Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) status as part of the application.

Job of the Week 8/18/17

This week we are highlighting an Assistant Director Residence Education (posting #457452) with Residential and Hospitality Services. This position provides leadership and direction for the residence halls in a neighborhood and is the residential representative for neighborhood initiatives.  This position also supervises and evaluates live-in professional staff and acts as liaison between the Engagement Center and the residential units within the neighborhood.  Other duties include, but are not limited to: chair of committees and liaison for institutional committees; consults with necessary partners on mental health issues; coordinates with judicial officers on appeals for contract terminations due to behavior and/or mental health issues; collaborates frequently with Assistant Director of Facilities of neighborhood; participates in duty rotation/crisis response management; works closely with the 24-hour Security Specialist to ensure policies and procedures are being followed and accountability is in place; develops and administers budgets for neighborhood; works collaboratively with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs and Physical Plant, and MSU Police; disciplines staff as needed with guidance from Human Resources.
