Healthy Summer Eating

Swimsuit season may have you running from sweets and avoiding the ice cream temptations, but eating healthy doesn’t always mean eating less of what you love. Nutritionist Peggy Crum, RD, says that eating balanced meals throughout your day is healthier for your body than keeping specific foods out of your diet.

“There’s something good about all foods,” Crum said. “Go ahead and plan [desserts] in.”Continue Reading… Healthy Summer Eating

Walking Paths on Campus

It’s always nice to get out of the office for a short time and it’s even nicer with such a large, beautiful campus. One of the largest in the nation, MSU’s campus has plenty of hidden paths that can give you the exercise you need and an interesting tour along the way. On the map below are three walking paths that I created: a tour of the beautiful MSU Landscaping (1.19 miles), a tour of MSU Landmarks (1.01 miles), and a tour of Campus Favorites (1.34 miles). Click on the photo below for information on stops along the way! For more walking route options, check out the Campus Walking Loops created by MSU Geographic Information System (GIS).Continue Reading… Walking Paths on Campus

Stretching at Your Desk

Sitting at a computer for hours every day is known to cause stiffness in your neck, shoulders and lower back. Since we all can’t make it to one of Health4U’s chair massages, try stretching at your desk! This Computer and Desk Stretches sheet can be used as a simple, easy and effective way to stretch out your soreness right at work. You can do one of them, a few of them or all of them in the order they appear on the PDF document for the best possible stretch! They only take about four minutes to complete and should make you feel better and therefore more productive! Try them out and see how you feel! If you’re still feeling stiff, it is also a good idea to try walking around the office to get your blood flowing again.

Once you’re at home if you are still sore from your day, look up the article, “Stress Management: Practicing Yoga to Relax” on the Healthwise Knowledgebase to relieve stress even further through deeper stretching. You might also like to try Health4U’s Kripalu Yoga classes, held every Friday during the lunch hour!Continue Reading… Stretching at Your Desk

Stay Aware with MSU ALERT

We don’t always like to think about the possibility of health or safety threats on campus, but they do happen. MSU ALERT is one way that Michigan State University delivers significant emergency information to the campus community. In the event of an emergency, MSU ALERT is able to send you an email message, an SMS text message to your cell phone and call you with a recorded message using the Blackboard Connect-Ed system.MSU Alert Icon

All employees are automatically subscribed to receive emergency notifications through MSU ALERT unless they opt-out. (It is strongly recommended that no employee opt-out of MSU ALERT.) MSU ALERT uses the MSU registered email address and phone number on file for you from the MSU directory. You can add additional contact information if desired. You also can add additional phone numbers that aren’t your own, such as a spouse, friend or neighbor if you would like them to be informed of emergency situations on campus.Continue Reading… Stay Aware with MSU ALERT
