Move it to Lose It: June Health Matters

Physical fitness is important to your overall well-being and health. People who are more active are generally healthier, have less difficulty managing their weight, and have fewer risks of health problems. Regular exercise can help relax your mind and ease tension to allow you to have a clear head facing daily challenges in life. Benefits of being active include relieving stress, reducing anxiety, depression, and anger.

Here are some benefits of being active:

  • lowering your blood pressure
  • increasing your level of good cholesterol
  • improving your blood flow
  • preventing bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis
  • increasing your overall energy levels

Start by making little steps each day like eating healthier and working out or walking. Also, pay attention to your sleeping patterns, making sure you are getting enough rest every night. Remember seven to nine hours is recommended for adults.

You can speak to your doctor about how to get started on a healthier and more active journey! Your Best Doctors benefit can be invaluable in clarifying or expanding your knowledge on health and wellness in general, with straightforward, comprehensive information on your diagnosis. Check out the MSU Student Organic Farm Stand

Have you heard about the MSU Student Organic Farm Stand? The MSU Student Organic Farm is a 15-acre certified organic farm that started in 1999. It began with MSU students who had an interest in learning to grow food sustainably. During this time, there were no organic agriculture classes available to gain knowledge or experience. The goal of the farm is to provide a place where students can volunteer, work, visit, and share their interest in the development of the land and farm. Since then, the farm has flourished over the years, becoming a place where people can engage with farming and creating learning opportunities through farming.

The Farm Stand opened the first week of April and will run through the end of October; it is available every Thursday from 11 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. It is located at Farm Lane and Auditorium Road next to the Rock under the big white tent. All the food they have available is USDA Certified Organic, locally grown and fresh. Here are some of the items they offer throughout the season:

  • Spring: eggs, asparagus, spinach, lettuce, brassica salad mix, chard, kale, radishes, turnips, peas, and strawberries.
  • Summer:  tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumber, summer squash, sweet corn, green beans, some cut flowers, raspberries, and other small fruit.
  • Fall: eggs, pumpkins, brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower, raspberries, strawberries, pears, Asian pears, grapes, hazelnuts, and dried flowers.

You can also find some of the Student Organic Farm produce at MSU’s dining halls such as Akers, Brody, Case, Landon and the MSU Food Truck. They also offer free tours this summer on Saturday, June 16, Sunday, July 22 and Saturday, August 18. You can RSVP to msufarm@msu.edu.
