This week’s Job of the Week is a Community Director (CD) with Residence Education and Housing Services in Residential & Hospitality Services. This is a live-in position with MSU in the residence halls. CD’s hold daily work-week hours and share on-call duty responsibilities with other CD’s on campus.

Other responsibilities in this position include leadership, management, supervision, and development for a residence hall or apartment community. CD’s will also provide high level customer service and create a community that fosters academic excellence and personal growth for its residents. The CD is responsible for following the policies and procedures of Residence Education and Housing Services, Residential and Hospitality Services, and the University. The qualified individual will be responsible for a variety of administrative, operational and conference functions associated with the management of the residence hall/apartment community.

Health4U Active Workplace Guide: Setting up your Workstation

The workstation – during the working day you are constantly revolving around your desk and work space, even if you’re in and out of meetings all day. But is your workstation set-up to optimize your comfort and productivity? Here are a few tips on organizing your workstation for the best results:

Focus on your keyboard, hands/arms, chair, and monitor first. Keep your keyboard center, elbows relaxed and slightly open and your chair at a level where your feet are flat on the floor.
Utilize support pads such as wrist, lumbar and armrests. These will alleviate pressure on the lower back and other joints.
Center your keyboard, mouse and monitor so the portion you use the most is center to your body. You should not need to twist to see the screen comfortably.

Other best practices include getting up to walk around throughout the day and to utilize angles for your chair, monitor and keyboard that are the most comfortable.

Start a new Christmas Tradition

Playmakers wants you to kick off the holiday by staying active and healthy. The Playmakers 5^th Annual Holiday Classic 5k Fun Run/Walk will be held Christmas Eve morning Sunday, December 24 at Jenison Field House.

A portion of all race entries will be divided between two local charities, the Greater Lansing Food Bank and the Playmakers Fitness Foundation. Registration is $30 until December 20; registration after December 20 will be $35. This year, family and friends pricing is being offered; save $5 per person when registering four or more 5k participants at the same time.

All participants will receive a custom pair of New Balance socks and a finisher Holiday . Sponsors of this event include Whole Foods, Starbucks, Keen, New Balance, Eagle Eye and Playmakers.

Job of the Week 12/15/17

This week’s Job of the Week is a Television Production Technician with the College of Communication Arts and Sciences in the Broadcasting Services department. WKAR Public Service is seeking a passionate and skilled videographer/editor to join their award-winning creative team.

An eligible candidate will be a strong storyteller with a proven track record of making creative short form video content and visually dynamic and compelling graphics. This individual will be using video, animation and interactive software. They will also be using Adobe Creative Suite tools to create design elements. Storytelling, layouts and technical skills in cameras, lighting and audio field production gear are also part of day-to-day responsibilities in this role.

After a long and successful semester, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the MSU Police Department for all that they do to keep our campus safe. The MSU Police work year-round to reduce crime, enforce laws, preserve peace, and provide a safe environment for students, faculty and staff to thrive.

The mission of the MSU Police is to enhance the quality of life on campus by building relationships, strengthening stewardship, and working collaboratively with MSU’s diverse community. They deliver on all fronts, and we are very appreciative of all their hard work.

Caring for Elders During the Holidays

Are you the primary caregiver for a parent, grandparent, ill spouse/partner, or child with special needs? We understand this can sometimes make life feel stressful and overwhelming. The WorkLife Office has put together the following tips to help make this season a smooth one for all.

Maintain daily routines, meal times and habits
Plan ahead. Dinners, travel and other tasks that need to get done
Ask for help and input from loved ones
Keep your sense of humor. Laugh, don’t cry when mistakes happen
Put down your technology and fully engage with the people around you

Lastly, take care of you. Carve out time each day to reflect, relax and practice gratefulness for the joys in your life.

Job of the Week 12/8/17

This week’s job of the week is an Auditor I with the President’s Office. The individual with this position will plan and execute internal financial and operational audits (e.g., athletics, health care, etc.) of University units to determine effectiveness, efficiency and compliance with university policy and other regulations; utilizes communication skills in working with others. Schedule is flexible to encourage healthy work/life balance.

To be considered for this position, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field and three to five years of related work experience; experience with data analytic software (ACL/IDEA); professional certification (CPA, CIA, CISA, etc.) or progress toward certification (able to obtain experience requirement at MSU); strong computer skills, including paperless documentation; excellent written and verbal communication skills. A resume and cover letter are required.

Support Students, shop at the Student Marketplace!

This holiday season, give back to the MSU student community by purchasing your gifts from the Student Marketplace! The MSU Entrepreneurship and Innovation Student Marketplace was developed to showcase businesses run by MSU students who are beginning their journeys as young entrepreneurs. The idea behind the Marketplace was to create an online space where products made by students can be featured, with new products being added all the time!

The mission within Undergraduate Entrepreneurship is to create an integrative culture of entrepreneurial thinking and pursuits that are university-wide and student-centered. This mission engages a broad spectrum of faculty and staff.

Each student run business is promoted and showcased through the Student Marketplace section of the Entrepreneurship website. Currently, there are seven student run businesses available on the site. Each business operates out of its own independent website, and transactions are done directly with the business.

The Marketplace is available for any student to feature their items regardless if they are undergraduate or graduate level, and the Marketplace is open to all students, regardless of major, to list their products. If a student is interested, they can submit a business to the Marketplace here.
