Explore fitness options at MSU this summer

Swimmer underwaterSummer is a great time to try out new forms of exercise. In addition to the variety of running trails crisscrossing campus, outdoor facilities such as the basketball courts, tennis courts, and the IM West outdoor swimming pool are open. Plus, with most students gone for the summer, more exercise machines and courts will be open for use in the indoor facilities. Check out some of the fitness options you can take advantage of this summer.

General use of facilities

Open Recreation

Faculty and staff only need to show a valid MSU ID for open recreation. It is available during posted building hours.

IM Sports West offers open recreation spaces for basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, tennis, squash, racquetball, handball, and wallyball. IM Sports East offers open recreation spaces for basketball, volleyball, badminton, squash, racquetball, handball and walleyball. IM Sports Circle offers spaces for basketball and volleyball. Equipment is available to rent.

Employees can also use the outdoor tennis courts, located near East and South neighborhoods, from daylight until midnight every night of the week. Equipment can be checked out from the IM West or IM East service desks with an MSU ID card.

Membership

Staff and faculty can pay a $3 daily fee for the use of the Fitness Centers or a group exercise class. View semester-based membership fees.

Group classes

Group exercise classes are fun and offer a variety of forms of exercise, from basic cardio to strength building or increasing flexibility. Employees can either pay the $3 daily fee or $40 for a summer pass. They are led by a trained instructor and held Monday through Thursday in the IM facilities. Check out a few of the classes offered this summer:

Sculpting with Weights (beginning May 23)
Mondays and Wednesdays 5:20–6:20 p.m.
IM East

Yogalates (beginning June 8)
Wednesdays 12:10–12:50 p.m.
IM Circle

Swimming

The IM West outdoor pool is open to students and MSU employees in the summer beginning the week of May 23 and will remain open until the end of October, weather dependent. Faculty and staff can use the pool for a daily fee of $3, a $25 monthly pass, or a $50 season pass. The IM Sports Circle and IM West indoor pool are free to use and are open year-round.  View the swimming pool hours.

Swimming classes

Beginner and intermediate adult swimming classes are offered, as well. Registration is due Thursday, May 27, at 4 p.m. Classes are 40 minutes long and meet once a week. They begin the week of June 6 and end the week of August 1. Both courses cost $55. Learn more.

Intramural Sports 

For competitive employees, MSU offers participation in intramural sports, as well. Interested participants can create their own teams or join existing ones. If you don’t have a team, you can register yourself as a free agent. Upcoming summer sports include basketball, kickball, soccer and softball. Costs vary depending on the sport and team. Personal Training

Faculty and staff and the spouses of faculty and staff can participate in a personal training program. Personal training includes a mini fitness evaluation, body composition, cardiovascular and strength training, goal setting, workout strategies, and follow-up consultation. Individual features of each component will depend upon the needs of the each client.
