Red Cedar River Memories

Have you taken a long walk along it with a loved one? Or fed the ducks by the Administration Building? Maybe you’ve viewed the graffiti under the bridge by The Rock? Or did you canoe through it? No matter which of these you’ve done (or maybe you haven’t done any at all!), we all seem to have great memories of the Red Cedar River on MSU’s campus. It flows through the historic and central parts of campus, and it’s difficult to pass by without noticing it. From hurried faculty and staff on their way to a class or meeting, to couples enjoying a romantic picnic, the Red Cedar has thousands of people visit each year.

If you haven’t had a chance to enjoy the Red Cedar River, we encourage you to do so soon! You can rent a bicycle from MSU Bikes at Bessey Hall, or you can walk along the many paths and bridges surrounding it.

  1. I love walking along the river on breaks and lunch. The beauty of the trees in the fall and passing beal gardens in the summer is spectacular!

  2. Back in the mid 80s when I was a student here, there was this huge and super-cranky Goose that always hung out in and around the Red Cedar along a path that went under a bridge that was a favorite student shortcut. If the Goose didn’t like you, he would come flapping out of the water as you went by and chase you up the hill trying to peck you. It was not uncommon to see students sprint through that path looking over their shoulders. Cranky Goose, but a fun memory after all these years! Hope he had a long and happy life on the Red Cedar because thinking about him and how he ruled the bridge still makes me smile after all these years.
