The 2014 MLK Celebration is almost upon us! Here are a few key events you don’t want to miss.
10th Anniversary of the MLK Student Leadership Conference
MSU’s Office for Inclusion is looking to shape young, positive leader’s right here in Lansing. A combination of educators, students and experienced professionals assemble together to make these events a huge success! The conference is Saturday, January 18 from 9 p.m. until 3 p.m. This is also a great opportunity for high school students to become better acquainted with the university setting. We encourage you all to invite your family and friends to this educational initiative.
Jazz, Spirituals, Prayers and Protest
The melodies of great music can bring all of us together. This is a great event for anyone looking to learn a little more about jazz and its roots, while being entrenched in positive prayer and learning the history of protest in our country. A host of American gospel and jazz singers perform at this event every year! This event is inside the Pasant Theatre within the Wharton Center for Performing Arts on Sunday, January 19 from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.
MLK Commemorative March
The walk has been a significant part of the festivities for a while now. Campus groups of all types are able to take their organizations banner and march in style. I had the distinct pleasure of assisting in leading the march through my fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha. Watching people of all different ethnicities and backgrounds brought a ton of joy to my heart. I take pride in knowing my actions, and the actions of my colleagues were recognized as being a part of MSU’s evolving culture. MSU students have been marching on campus for over 30 years now. According to the Office for Inclusion, the walk began because of issues with civil and human rights. Don’t miss out on this important, historic event at 3 p.m. on Monday, Janaury 20!
MLK Community Celebration Dinner
The MLK Community Celebration Dinner, taking place Monday, January 20 at 5:30 p.m., is open to the whole family. The community dinner has been a staple in East Lansing for years now. The East Lansing and Lansing residents are welcome to come together and fellowship as one. According to the Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives, guests are limited two tickets per person when registering online. Register here!
