Do you want to flex your legs, see amazing scenery and increase your energy? Then the Campus Walking Loops interactive map is just for you.
Campus Walking Loops is an interactive map that displays walking routes across campus. The map lists the distance of each route to help you coordinate your walking schedule, along with emergency phones and campus art features. There is also a downloadable PDF version available on the website.
Walking is good for you. According to the MSU Health e-Guide, walking can strengthen the heart, increase blood circulation throughout the body, lower blood pressure, reduce body fat and improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Jonathan Kermit, a Health Educator at Olin Health Center, recommends people going for a walk consider the following tips:
- Bring along water if you are going to be walking longer than 30 minutes.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes that provide support, such as designated walking or running shoes.
- Use sunscreen if you’re going to be in the sun (walking in the woods or a grassy area may require mosquito repellent).
- Know the walking route you plan to take before starting your walk.
- Stay on a softer surface such as a walking trail or grass, which has less impact on your knees and hips.
With all the wonderful walking routes available on MSU’s campus, walking for health or just to enjoy nature has never been easier.
The Campus Walking Loops map was developed by GIS in partnership with MSUs’ Health4U program.
Want to win a pedometer? From July 16 to July 31, we’re asking all MSU faculty and staff for a picture taken along their favorite walking routes on MSU’s campus. We will be giving away two pedometers from randomly selected photo submissions. You can upload your photo to Facebook and tag us, tweet it and include hashtag #msuhr or email your picture to hrcommteam@hr.msu.edu. Only one photo is permitted.
