Don’t Let Change Stress You Out

Avoiding stress in times of change and transition tends to be easier said than done. Whether it be at work or at home, those changes can be difficult to cope with. Organization and Employee Development Consultant Carrie Galdes is offering a new class, “Don’t Let Change Stress You Out,” on Tuesday, November 6. Although it’s new to Human Resource Development (HRD), Galdes has been teaching classes on stress for many years. People who have taken it in the past have told her the class is like taking a break from life.

“It’s taking a time-out to reassess your priorities in life,” she said.

The class entails discussing what changes might be affecting you right now, such as a new boss or new work environment, or even positive changes like getting married or expecting a baby. Galdes said changes are events, but the transition afterward is what causes the stress, and how you respond to that stress is different for everyone.

“We are all doing something now that helps us cope with the stress in our lives,” she said.

The class helps identify ways that you cope now and provides strategies for how to cope that will be better for your health physically, mentally and emotionally. To do that, Galdes explains how to figure out what’s in disharmony in your life and gives strategies for how to balance and revitalize your life again.

“[This workshop] is very personal and individualized because it’s different for everyone,” Galdes said.

She also said one of the keys to coping is realizing what you can control and what you can’t. When the class is over, each participant will have a strategy to take with them and try out.
