7 Tips for Managing Stress

April is Stress Awareness Month. Stress is something that everyone deals with and not many people know how to manage. Chronic and sudden stress can change productivity in your daily functions such as decision making, work performance, and overall self-confidence and motivation.

Here are some suggestions for centering yourself and helping manage stress:

  1. Try deep breaths such as breathing in, count to four and then exhale. Try it three to four times.
  2. Listening to music or mediation is a great way to manage stress and create positive energy. There are also apps that you can download to help you meditate.
  3. Put yourself first! If you have a lot going on, try moving your schedule around to create more open time for yourself. Make a commitment to give yourself some free time throughout the day.
  4. Get away from technology. Try taking a break from your computer and other technology around the office/home. Give up technology 30 minutes before bed to increase a deeper sleep.
  5. Get outside. Spend some time outside throughout your day at work. Spring finally seems to be here, so start walking outside on your lunch break. Take advantage of our beautiful campus!
  6. Energy: If you become tense, irritated, or annoyed, realize what’s happening and act on your energy. Create some space between you and that person and reflect on how you feel. Don’t ignore your feelings.
  7. Take time for yourself with a massage. There are some resources available at Olin Health Center for stress as well. They offer services with State of Relaxation such as massage, reiki, and reflexology.

With these seven tips, you can manage your stress better. Try at least one of these tips and see how you feel. Learn what works for you and be open to trying new methods for figuring it out. For more information on managing stress check out these two articles from Health4U, Got Big Stress and Taking Care of You While Taking Care of Business.

Additionally, sign-up to the Sustainable High Performance course through Organization and Professional Development on June 21/22.

Thank You Landscape Services

They’re the front line battling all kinds of weather on MSU’s East Lansing campus – clearing off roads so students and employees can move around campus, salting sidewalks, setting up flood barriers and soon, getting MSU ready for a picture-perfect spring. They’re the team members that make up the Department of Landscape Services.

But have you ever wondered what it takes to battle the elements or to keep the campus looking its best? Landscape Services crews are made up of arborists, gardeners, mechanics, irrigation, and many more. And the department went to great lengths to engage its team in their own development to grow and build skills in each of these fields.

Recently, MSU Human Resources had the chance to work with Human Resources staff at Infrastructure Planning and Facilities to really dive into the different job types at Landscape Services. This eventually led to what Landscape Services calls its Career Map Wall. This wall shows a breakdown of the different job types in Landscape Services and what an individual would need to acquire to build a career. Check out the following video to see the wall and hear more from Director of Campus

Why is this Career Map Wall and the concept behind it so valuable to Landscape Services? According to Lawver, “The vision behind the Career Map Wall was to provide our workforce with transparency and clarity around what knowledge, skills, and abilities were required to advance one’s career at Landscape Services. Most employees want to know how they fit into the big picture and what specifically they need to do to advance in their career. The Career Map Wall leverages the MSU mission and focuses inward on our workforce to support and build each other.”second quote landscape

Thanks to Landscape Services for all your engagement with your work to keep campus ready and looking great in every season!

Activities for Kids in April and Beyond

This is a guest post written by Lydia Weiss from the MSU WorkLife Office.

If you have kids in your life, one thing you are probably keenly aware of is that they keep you busy. It’s also sometimes difficult to find activities that they enjoy, especially activities and opportunities that keep their brains, creativity, and learning engaged. It can become even more complicated if you have several kids in your life and they all have different interests. Well, here’s the good news – there are tons of options available in the Greater Lansing area for youth, some of which are available right here at Michigan State.

First up is Girls Get Going on April 14, 2018. This is a half day free sports clinic for 3rd – 8th grade girls to try new sports in a safe and supportive environment. This is the 15th year that Girls Get Going has been hosted at MSU. The event is sponsored by Recreational Sports and Fitness Services, Intercollegiate Athletics, WorkLife Office and Daring Ideas Consulting, LLC.

Also happening in April is Take Your Child to Work Day on Thursday, April 26, 2018. This is a nationally recognized event that is celebrated at MSU in a very unique way. Participants have the opportunity to tour various departments and/or career exploration activities throughout the day on campus. Some of the tours this year include bowling at the Union Building, visiting the horse farm, going behind the scenes at the Wharton Center, and much more! If you’d like to participate, please note the activities are intended for kids ages 8-14, with a supervising adult. The full list of tours will be published by April 20 on the WorkLife Office website.

Summer can also present unique challenges for caring for kids and finding activities to keep them entertained and continuing to learn. Luckily, there are dozens of summer camps for youth of all ages! Check out this extensive list of programs available in the local area here. You can also use the searchable Spartan Youth Programs web page to discover different opportunities to keep your kids engaged and learning over the summer.

And of course, if you need in-home dependent care, you have free access to Care.com as an MSU faculty/staff member. Just sign-up with your MSU Net-ID and you can browse hundreds of local care providers to find the one that is right for you and your family.
