Spring is time to start cleaning in so many ways; don’t forget your electronic tools and toys in your cleaning rituals. While you don’t ever want to use your regular vacuum on sensitive electronics or run your keyboard through the dishwasher, there are some tools that you can use safely. Microfiber cloths are great for dusting and canned air is invaluable for blowing out the debris.

Keyboards

We really do not want to know what is on that keyboard that we touch probably hundreds of times a day. Cleaning a regular keyboard is relatively easy. First, turn off your computer and detach the keyboard cable, then turn the keyboard over and shake to dislodge loose particles.  Depending on how long it has been since you did this, you may need a broom to clean up that mess! If you are cleaning a laptop keyboard, skip the shaking part and use canned air to blow out particles.  You can clean the keys with a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol – use as little liquid as possible. One of the applications offered through RS&GIS is the Walking Loops. This application provides you with many different-length paths for exploring MSU’s campus and exercising! The application highlights the locations of public art pieces on the loops for your enjoyment; it also provides emergency phone locations for your safety. “Go Green,” means recycling and that’s exactly what MSU is doing with their participation in RecycleMania. RecycleMania is an eight-week competition between different universities in the United States, created to find out which college can collect and recycle the most trash and to promote waste reduction. The competition runs from Feb. 3 to March 30, 2013 and is being led at MSU by the MSU Recycling Center.

MSU’s participation in RecycleMania is one component of the college’s larger campaign for campus sustainability, which includes: clean and affordable energy, access to education and to safe food and water supplies, improved health, less work and more efficiency. Do you love chocolate or have friends and family that do? Then stop by the Kellogg Center on Sunday, Feb. 24 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for Chocolate in 3D! Chocolate in 3D! is MSU Museum’s twenty-fourth annual Chocolate Party Benefit featuring cheesecakes, tortes, fountains and other delectable chocolate goodies. The MSU Museum Chocolate Benefit is a competition between local restaurants, caterers and bakeshops, and is one of few professional culinary events in the country open to the public. Each competitor uses their skills to craft pyramids, film reels and other items made from chocolate.

Chocolate Benefit competitors for 2013 include: Bake N’ Cakes, American Crepes, The Sweet Cake Company, How Sweet It Is, Aggie Mae’s and others. All proceeds raised from the event will benefit the MSU Museum’s collections.
