Here are a few safety tips for getting around in the cold and snow.<\/p>\n<p>Driving<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drive slowly and leave extra room between you and the vehicle in front of you.<\/li>\n<li>Anticipate extra time needed for scraping ice and snow off your vehicle and\/or slower driving.<\/li>\n<li>Always have at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle.<\/li>\n<li>Leave with warm clothes. If you get in an accident or your vehicle gets stuck, you will need to spend some time outside.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t warm up your vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the exhaust pipe isn\u2019t clogged with snow, ice or mud.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read\u00a0more driving tips from <a href=\"http:\/\/exchange.aaa.com\/safety\/roadway-safety\/winter-driving-tips\/#.VmXMTtKrSUk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AAA<\/a>\u00a0and all about <a href=\"http:\/\/ipf.msu.edu\/green\/practices\/snow-removal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">snow removal<\/a>\u00a0at MSU.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Walking<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to avoid the harsh elements of winter, even if it\u2019s just a short walk from the parking lot to your office. Make sure to check the ground for slippery ice before stepping out of your vehicle. If you\u2019re walking for exercise or need to go a long distance, avoid wearing cotton.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t dry out after getting wet from slush or sweat, which can lead to chills and sickness.<\/p>\n<p>There are approximately <a href=\"http:\/\/ipf.msu.edu\/green\/practices\/heated-sidewalks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">160,000 square feet of heated sidewalks<\/a>\u00a0on MSU\u2019s campus. If the sidewalk near your building is icy, you can throw on some ice melt salt from buckets located in many of the entrances to buildings on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Biking<\/p>\n<p>Using this two-wheeled transportation method is more challenging in the cold in snow, but it is still quite possible!
