Cardiovascular disease, which refers to several conditions including coronary artery disease (CAD), heart attack, stroke, heart failure, arrhythmia, and heart valve problems,<em>\u202fresults in one death every 34 seconds<\/em>\u202f(<strong><em>CDC, <\/em>2026<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiovascular disease is no longer something people only have to worry about as they get older. The CDC states, \u201cIn 2023, about 1 out of every 6 deaths from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) was among adults younger than 65 years old\u201d (<strong>CDC, 2026<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is cardiovascular disease is largely preventable by living a healthy lifestyle. The following tips and MSU benefit resources will help keep you and your family healthy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Know Your Numbers:<\/strong> Take charge of your health by knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels and take steps to improve them if needed.<ul> <li><strong>Schedule your annual wellness check-up. <\/strong>Many miss their annual check-up because they forget or don\u2019t prioritize it. Schedule your yearly visit so your doctor can check these numbers and other important health metrics. If you\u2019re enrolled in an MSU health plan, you can <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hr.msu.edu\/benefits\/healthcare\/index.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/hr.msu.edu\/benefits\/healthcare\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">learn more about your plan and find links to find a provider <\/a>on the HR website.<\/li><\/ul><strong><span style=\"color: initial;\"> <\/span><\/strong><ul><li><strong style=\"color: initial;\"><span style=\"color: initial;\">Use Livongo by Teledoc Health for Diabetes Management.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: initial;\"> Livongo is a diabetes management program that provides unlimited test strips, connected meter, optional coaching, online records, and more \u2013 all FREE for MSU employees and their eligible dependents who are enrolled in an MSU health plan.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hr.msu.edu\/benefits\/healthcare\/livongo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u202fLearn more about Livongo and how to sign up.<\/a><span style=\"color: initial;\"> <\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Support Your Mental Health:<\/strong> According to the American Heart Association, \u201cIncreasing evidence shows that biological and chemical factors that trigger mental health issues may also influence heart disease\u201d (<strong>AHA, 2023<\/strong>). These chemical changes can predispose people to other health issues, such as cardiovascular disease. <a href=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Health and Wellbeing<\/a> supports our university community with health and well-being equitably woven throughout all aspects of Spartan life. They offer a variety of resources for employees, including: \n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/health-and-wellbeing-services\/mental-health-and-trauma-support\/eap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Employee Assistance Program (EAP):<\/a> Available through University Health and Wellbeing, MSU employees or retirees and their benefits-eligible dependents have access to the EAP, which provides confidential counseling at no cost. To best fit your schedule, EAP offers both virtual and in-person appointments.\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/health-and-wellbeing-services\/health-promotion\/spartan-resilience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spartan Resilience Educational Webinars:<\/a> From understanding shame and building shame resilience to setting healthy boundaries and navigating hard times, these webinars are here to help!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/health-and-wellbeing-services\/health-promotion\/health-promotion-for-faculty-and-staff\/move-more-at-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Move More @ Work:<\/a> An ongoing campaign facilitated by University Health and Wellbeing\u2019s Health Promotion and Engagement office. Avoiding these conditions may decrease your risk of developing cardiovascular disease.\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong> Eat a Variety of Plants:<\/strong> Try to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables <strong>(American Heart Association<\/strong>, <strong>2025)<\/strong>. The AHA also recommends whole grains, beans and legumes, nuts, fish, lean meat, dairy foods, plant-based milk alternatives, healthy fats, and salt-free seasonings. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong> Beware of Unexpected Sources of Sodium:<\/strong> The<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/salt\/about\/index.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/salt\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"> top sources of sodium<\/a>\u202fin the American diet include some unexpected items, including bread, sandwiches, cold cuts, pizza, desserts, and condiments <strong>(CDC, 2025)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong> Food and Nutrition Counseling for MSU Employees.<\/strong> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/health-and-wellbeing-services\/fitness-and-nutrition\/nutrition\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/health-and-wellbeing-services\/fitness-and-nutrition\/nutrition\" target=\"_blank\">MSU Registered Dietitian Nutritionists provide free, confidential nutrition appointments<\/a> to employees and their spouses\/partners. They promote a non-diet and weight-neutral approach that uses an eating competence model to support health. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Get Regular Physical Activity:\u202f<\/strong>The\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/fitness\/fitness-basics\/aha-recs-for-physical-activity-in-adults\" target=\"_blank\">American Heart Association recommends<\/a>\u202fat least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week for adults (<strong>AHA, 2024<\/strong>).\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/health-and-wellbeing-services\/fitness-and-nutrition\/spartan-fit\" target=\"_blank\">University Health and Wellbeing\u2019s SPARTANfit programs<\/a> aim to promote lifelong health habits and include the following options for employees:\n<ul>\n<li>You and your spouse\/partner can use the<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/health-and-wellbeing-services\/fitness-and-nutrition\/spartan-fit\/comprehensive-fitness-assessment\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/health-and-wellbeing-services\/fitness-and-nutrition\/spartan-fit\/comprehensive-fitness-assessment\" target=\"_blank\">\u202fComprehensive Fitness Assessment<\/a> to assess your\/their current level of fitness and establish a goal-oriented fitness and wellness plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> A\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/health-and-wellbeing-services\/fitness-and-nutrition\/spartan-fit\/functional-movement\" target=\"_blank\">Functional Movement Screening<\/a> consists of seven movement assessments designed to identify areas of imbalance by testing your mobility and stability. A certified professional will lead you through the assessment and then provide you with corrective exercises to implement.\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uhw.msu.edu\/health-and-wellbeing-services\/fitness-and-nutrition\/spartan-fit\/inbody-body-composition\" target=\"_blank\">InBody Body Composition Analysis<\/a> provides a comprehensive estimate of overall body composition.
